NBC News projects that Democrats have won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 2026 midterm elections. In the House, Democrats are projected to take about 255 seats, well above the 218 needed for a majority. They held 215 seats going in and needed a net gain of three.

Democrats flipped many Republican-held seats, mostly in districts Donald Trump carried in 2024. Among the defeated incumbents are Brian Fitzpatrick and Scott Perry in Pennsylvania, Jen Kiggans and Rob Wittman in Virginia, Tom Kean Jr. in New Jersey, Gabe Evans in Colorado and Victoria Spartz in Indiana.

Incoming House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said voters want "transformational change" and named priorities: reversing Medicaid cuts, extending Affordable Care Act credits, restoring congressional authority over tariffs and stopping the Iran war. With the majority, Democrats gain subpoena power and oversight authority, and will take office in January.
