French President Emmanuel Macron appealed for calm on Sunday after a weekend of riots in which a mob set fire to the 19th-century town hall of Limoges on Saturday. The local prefect said the building was "largely lost", with the roof and clock tower destroyed.

According to the Interior Ministry, about 1,800 people have been arrested nationwide, 855 of them in the Paris region, and hundreds of police officers, firefighters and paramedics were injured. Looting and clashes were also reported in Paris and Marseille. Protesters cite high prices and cuts to public services.

Macron said there is "no place for violence in our republic" and promised that those who attacked prefectures, shops and town halls will be prosecuted and punished. Some outlets report arrest totals above 2,000, so the figures differ by source.
