Overview

The Corsican Dog, or Cursinu, is a versatile working dog from the island of Corsica. It has been used as a sheepdog, cattle herder, watchdog and boar hunter, and increasingly as a companion.

It is a medium-sized, rustic dog with a brindled or fawn coat, and is classed among the primitive spitz-type breeds.

History

The Cursinu has been known on Corsica since the sixteenth century, serving farmers and hunters as an all-round helper. Until the 1950s it was used widely on the island.

In the later twentieth century the breed declined under competition from continental breeds. A preservation association was founded in 1989, and the French kennel club, the Société Centrale Canine, recognised the breed in 2003.

Appearance

This is a medium-sized dog standing about 46 to 58 cm at the withers, with males slightly larger. The skin fits closely to the body with no dewlaps.

The coat is often brindle, fawn, black and tan or brown, and a dark mask is allowed. White markings may appear on the chest or legs. Some dogs have a longer, fluffier coat.

Temperament

Used to working closely with people, the Cursinu is a capable and watchful dog that can be a pleasant companion. It may need more training and firm, consistent guidance than some other breeds.

Care and exercise

Active and rustic, it needs regular exercise and a job or outlet for its working instincts. Early training and socialisation are worthwhile. The coat is easy to maintain with occasional brushing.

Health

No breed-specific health problems are known, and the dog is generally robust.
