Hurricane Polo made landfall on the west coast of Mexico's Baja California Sur with maximum sustained winds near 110 mph (175 km/h), about 80 miles north of Cabo San Lazaro, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. The storm had earlier peaked near Category 5 strength before weakening.

Forecasters expect Polo to cross the peninsula overnight and move inland over southern Sonora on Tuesday morning, remaining a hurricane through a second landfall on mainland Mexico. Hurricane warnings cover parts of both coasts of Baja California Sur and the mainland.

The NHC warns of 6-12 inches of rain across Baja California Sur and 4-8 inches in Sonora, plus significant storm surge and dangerous surf. Authorities closed harbors and restricted beach access, and moisture from the system could reach Texas.
