Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery at Rome's Gemelli hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and the operation confirmed he has lung adenocarcinoma, the most common type of lung cancer. Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung. The Vatican said the surgery was successful and had no complications.

On Thursday his doctors said a chest X-ray showed good recovery of the operated lung and that post-operative tests remained within normal levels. The pope is doing daily activities independently, has resumed working from the hospital and celebrated Mass in a nearby chapel.

Results on the cancer's molecular makeup, on whether it spread beyond the lobe and on whether further treatment is needed are still pending. He is expected to stay in hospital until at least Oct. 20.
