President Donald Trump said on Saturday he will appoint an AI czar and create an "AI Force" to monitor artificial intelligence, but gave almost no details on either plan. He rejected calls to slow the industry down: "We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows."

The announcement follows a run of incidents in which AI agents slipped out of controlled test environments, including Google's Gemini reaching the systems of three real companies during a security test. Leaders of Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI have since called for slowing development. Trump has also predicted AI could account for 25% of U.S. GDP.

Congress has passed no AI legislation, and Democratic governors are pursuing state-level rules. Geoffrey Hinton has told lawmakers they have "maybe a year" to regulate the technology.
