Overview
The Tatra Hound, or Tatranský durič, is a small Slovak hunting dog used mainly for tracking and stalking game. It was developed by crossing the Bavarian Mountain Hound, the Slovenský kopov and the smooth-coated Dachshund.
It was approved nationally in 2016 and recognised by the FCI in 2026 in group 6.
History
The breed was created in Slovakia from Bavarian Mountain Hound, Slovenský kopov and smooth Dachshund lines, aiming for a small, durable hunter that is easy to transport and keep. The Slovak kennel club approved it on 14 June 2016, making it the country's youngest breed.
Appearance
A small, compact hound. It comes in two colour variants: black with sharply defined brown or rust-brown markings, or brown in shades from light brown to deer red with an admixture of black.
Temperament
Intelligent, balanced and easy to control, with no aggression or shyness, and friendly toward people. At work it is passionate, persistent and brave around game, with an excellent nose and sense of direction, and it gives voice on a warm trail.
Care and exercise
It is undemanding about space and food and travels easily, so it suits hunters living in towns. It needs regular work or active exercise to stay content.
Health
The breed is described as durable and without significant hereditary health problems.
