Overview
The Sarabi is a big, powerful guardian from Sarab County in Iran. It is calm and controlled but independent and protective, and it has been trusted for centuries to guard herds.
It is regarded as one of Iran's oldest and strongest native breeds, and larger dogs are the most valued.
History
Sarabi dogs have protected livestock for centuries against Syrian brown bears, Indian wolves, golden jackals, striped hyenas and Persian leopards, and in the past even the Caspian tiger.
The breed is named for Sarab County. It has also been used as a hunting dog, and sadly in staged dog fights, a practice that is cruel and illegal in many countries.
Appearance
The Sarabi is a large, heavy, powerful mastiff-type dog. Size matters greatly to its keepers, and larger, heavier dogs are considered more valuable. Exact standards are not widely established.
Temperament
This is a calm, self-reliant guardian that thinks for itself. It is protective of its flock and territory and is not eager to please like a gundog. It needs experienced, confident handling.
Care and exercise
A Sarabi needs space, a secure enclosure and firm, patient leadership with early socialisation. It is not suited to small homes or first-time owners. Plan for a large appetite and regular exercise.
