Overview
The Hygen Hound is a Norwegian scenthound developed in the 1800s by a breeder named Hygen, who combined several hound breeds.
It is an endurance hunter, able to work for long periods over difficult northern country without tiring.
History
The breed was created in the 19th century by Norwegian breeder Hygen, who blended various hound breeds to produce a dog suited to Norwegian hunting conditions.
The aim was a hound with great stamina that could cope with cold, rough terrain. It is recognised by the FCI as a Norwegian breed.
Appearance
A solid, compact hound of about 48 to 61 cm and 20 to 25 kg, with a level topline and strong, muscular legs.
The head is triangular with a broad skull, dark eyes and wide ears. The coat is thick, shiny and straight, in yellow, red or chestnut, or black with bright chestnut, sometimes with white markings.
Temperament
Energetic and free-spirited, this is a working hound that loves to run and follow a trail.
It does best with owners who understand independent scenthounds and can offer plenty of activity.
Care and exercise
It needs a great deal of daily exercise and space to roam safely, ideally with scent work or hunting. Secure fencing and a leash near open country are wise because it will follow its nose.
The straight coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing.
