At a glance

Overview

The Welsh Springer Spaniel is a member of the spaniel family, bred to spring game for hunters. It is slightly smaller than the English Springer and comes only in red and white.

It is loyal and loving with its family, though it can be wary of strangers. It is rarer than the English Springer and is listed as a Vulnerable Native Breed in the UK.

History

The breed's origins are unknown, but red and white spaniels resembling it appear in old pictures and prints, and it is thought to be similar to the old Land Spaniel. It was once called the Welsh Starter and was used to spring game for hunters with falcons.

It was little known until 1900, when Mr A. T. Williams's dogs won successive field trials. The Kennel Club recognised the breed in 1902, and the American Kennel Club followed in 1906. The two world wars hit numbers hard, and today's dogs descend from the survivors.

Appearance

A compact, solidly built dog made for hard work and endurance, slightly longer than tall. The ears are small, hanging and vine-leaf shaped with light feathering. The chest, legs and underside carry feathering, and the tail is lightly feathered.

The only colour is rich red and white, in any pattern, and white areas may be flecked with red ticking.

Temperament

Welsh Springers are active, affectionate and devoted, and they can become very attached to their family. They are friendly with children and other household pets. They may bark at strangers and be aloof or cautious with them. They learn quickly but can be headstrong, and some suffer from separation anxiety if left alone.

Care and exercise

This working spaniel needs regular, vigorous exercise and something to do, otherwise it may become hyperactive. Early socialisation and firm, positive training help.

Brush the coat regularly, especially the feathering, and check the ears often. Watch their food intake, as some dogs gain weight easily.

Health

Generally a healthy breed, though hip dysplasia and some eye conditions such as glaucoma occur more than average. Like other dogs with hanging ears, they are prone to ear infections, and some tend to become overweight.
