Overview

The Podengo Galego is a traditional warren hound from Galicia in north-western Spain. It is of light build and is used mainly for rabbit and hare, sometimes fox.

It is one of four traditional Galician breeds and is related to the medium-sized Podengo Português of northern Portugal.

History

The breed was officially recognised by the Xunta de Galicia in April 2001 and nationally by royal decree in May of the same year, when a stud-book was begun and handed to the breed society. It is found across Galicia, mainly in Ourense and Pontevedra.

Its conservation status was once described as in danger of extinction but has been improving. A 2024 census in parts of Pontevedra counted 1059 dogs, and in 2025 it was listed among breeds in recovery.

Appearance

A medium-sized dog of light build. Dogs stand about 46 to 52 cm at the withers and bitches 42 to 46 cm, with bitches a little more slender. Weight is around 10 to 15 kg.

Temperament

A keen working hound, it is quick, lively and devoted to the hunt. It can also be trained to find feathered game such as partridge, quail or woodcock.

Care and exercise

It needs plenty of daily exercise and a secure yard, as it will follow a scent or a movement. Grooming is minimal.
