Overview

The Podenco Valenciano is a medium-sized, muscular Spanish warren hound from the Valencian Community. It is also called the Xarnego Valenciano or Gos Coniller.

It was the hunting dog of ordinary country people, used mostly for catching rabbits at night, and is adapted to warm climates.

History

The breed began as a working dog of the lower classes, used to hunt small game, mainly rabbits, after dark. It has been found in Aragon, Andalusia, Catalonia, Murcia and La Mancha.

Fanciers formed a breed club in 2009. It was recognised as a native Valencian breed in 2013 and by the Spanish kennel club in 2017. It is currently considered a vulnerable Spanish breed.

Appearance

A muscular, medium-sized dog with a coat that may be silky, smooth or rough, and no undercoat. Colours include black, white and a range of browns. The standard does not allow floppy ears.

Temperament

Typical of warren hounds, it is an active, keen hunter with sharp senses. It needs an outlet for its drive.

Care and exercise

Expect plenty of daily exercise in a secure area, since the hunting instinct is strong. The coat is easy to care for with occasional brushing. With no undercoat, it feels the cold and needs warmth in winter.
