Overview
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is one of four Griffon Vendéen breeds and one of six basset-type breeds recognised by the FCI. It was developed to follow hares through the thorny, brush-filled country of the Vendée.
It is a sturdy, long-bodied little hound with a lively expression, and it remains an enthusiastic scent hunter as well as a cheerful family dog.
History
The breed comes from the Vendée district of western France, where hunters needed a low, tough, scenting hound that could work dense undergrowth after hares on foot. It is the smaller relative of the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen and part of the wider Griffon Vendéen family. Today it is mainly kept as a companion and show dog but still has a strong hunting drive.
Appearance
A compact, long-bodied hound on short legs, with a rough, harsh coat, bushy eyebrows, a beard and moustache. The ears are long and the tail is carried high. Most dogs weigh around 15 kg.
Temperament
Happy, outgoing and curious, the PBGV is usually good-natured with people and other dogs. It thinks for itself and follows its nose, so training takes patience, humour and rewards. It can be quite vocal.
Care and exercise
It needs daily walks and the chance to sniff and explore, preferably in a secure area because it will follow a scent. Brush the rough coat a couple of times a week, tidy it occasionally, and keep the long ears and beard clean.
Health
A 2024 UK study found an average life expectancy of 13.7 years. Reported concerns include ear infections, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, hip problems linked to the long back and short legs, and primary open angle glaucoma, which has a known genetic cause (ADAMTS17).
