Overview

The Liangshan Dog is a medium-sized scenthound originally bred by the Yi people of Liangshan Yi Prefecture in Sichuan, China. It is a true working hunter, prized for tracking, endurance and fierceness.

It hunts a range of prey at different altitudes and in different climates, and is best known for taking on wild boar in rugged, mountainous country.

History

The breed was shaped by the Yi people, who relied on it to hunt in the mountains of Liangshan. Hunters traditionally kept the dogs slightly underfed to sharpen their drive and keep them keen.

Appearance

A medium-sized dog with triangular eyes, rounded drop ears and a bushy, curved tail. The head is black, while the body is a blend of reds, yellows and greys, often with banded hairs. The coat is short and double.

Temperament

Tough, focused and tenacious, with a very strong prey drive. It is a working hunter rather than a casual pet and is best suited to experienced handlers.

Care and exercise

It needs a lot of exercise, space and meaningful work. Its short double coat is easy to maintain with weekly brushing. Strong prey drive means secure fencing and careful introductions to other animals.
