Overview

The Chongqing Dog is a medium-sized, compact and muscular dog from the mountainous region around Chongqing in south-western China. It is one of the traditional Chinese tugou, or native dogs, and has served as both hunter and guardian for many centuries.

Today it is valued as a fearless protector of family and home. Its strong character, confidence and love of play make it a lively companion for owners who can offer plenty of activity and leadership.

History

The Chongqing Dog is thought to have appeared during the Han Dynasty. Ceramic figures of dogs of this type, dated to roughly 206 BCE to 220 CE, have been found guarding graves in the Jiangbei area of Chongqing.

It was developed as a hunting dog in the mountains of eastern Sichuan. Rapid urbanisation of Chongqing sharply reduced its numbers, but since the 1970s dedicated efforts have restored the breed, and it has become a popular working and companion dog again.

Appearance

This is a medium-sized dog with a compact, muscular body, a square head and a pronounced stop. The tail is short and carried upright, often compared to a bamboo stick. The ears are naturally erect and are never cropped.

The short, coarse coat is reddish-brown or black, and the tongue is a distinctive blue-black.

Temperament

The Chongqing Dog has a strong, outgoing character with a confident attitude and a real need to explore and play. It is friendly with children and makes an alert family guardian.

It has a strong prey drive and an excellent nose, so it needs sensible handling around small animals and firm, consistent training.

Care and exercise

This is an active dog that needs daily exercise, mental stimulation and a secure yard or area for activity. Its short coat is easy to care for with occasional brushing.

Early socialisation and steady training help channel its guarding instincts and strong hunting drive.

Health

Generally a hardy, long-lived dog that can reach about 15 years. No specific breed-related health problems are well documented.
