Overview

The Chilean Terrier is a small, tri-coloured terrier that has lived alongside Chilean families for well over a century. It is best known as a tireless hunter of rats and mice, and as the real-life model for Washington, the faithful dog of the comic character Condorito.

Today it is equally at home on a farm or in a city flat, where it makes an attentive and cheerful companion. It is recognised by the Kennel Club of Chile and the Alianz Canine Worldwide, but not yet by the FCI.

History

The breed grew out of Smooth Fox Terriers brought to South America by European immigrants to control rats, which were crossed with the Andalusian ratting dog known as the Ratonero Bodeguero Andaluz. From the English side came a restless, vocal nature; from the local dogs came balance, courage and loyalty.

For generations it worked on estates in south-central Chile, then followed farming families into the growing cities, where it kept down vermin in new industries and settlements. Breeders paid it little attention for a long time, but it stayed in ordinary homes and became a national symbol through Condorito. It gained international recognition from the ACW in 2011.

Appearance

A small, neat terrier, mainly white with black and tan markings, sometimes with dark spots showing through the short coat. The ears are set high and fold forward in a V shape, and the teeth and bite are well developed.

Males stand about 32 to 38 cm at the withers and females about 28 to 35 cm. Weight runs from roughly 4 to 8 kg, with males a little heavier.

Temperament

Alert, lively and quick, the Chilean Terrier is a bold little dog with a strong sense of duty. It is devoted to its family and attentive to what goes on around the house.

Like many terriers it tends to bark and to chase small animals, so early training and socialisation help keep it well mannered.

Care and exercise

This is an easy dog to keep, adaptable to many climates and living situations. Daily walks and play satisfy its energy, and it enjoys having a job or a game to focus on.

The short coat needs only occasional brushing. Secure fencing is wise, as its hunting instinct can send it after rodents and other small creatures.

Health

The breed is generally regarded as hardy and robust, and no specific hereditary problems are well documented. Routine vaccination, dental care and weight control are the main concerns.
