Overview
The Ca Rater Mallorquí is a small ratting dog from the island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. It is lean, square in outline and quick, with a black-and-tan or brown-and-tan coat.
It is recognised by the Balearic government and by Spain, though not by the FCI. It serves as a keen hunter, a good watchdog and a companion.
History
The origins are unclear and there is no documentary evidence before the later nineteenth century. It resembles the Gos Rater Valencià, and some link this to Valencian rice farmers who came to work in Mallorca's wetlands in 1901. Some English terrier blood may also have been added.
A breed club was set up in 1990 and registrations began. The Balearic government recognised the breed in 2002 and national recognition followed in 2004.
Appearance
A small dog under 40 cm, usually 29 to 33 cm for females and 32 to 36 cm for males, weighing around 3 to 5 kg. The body is close to square, with females slightly longer.
The short coat is black and tan or brown and tan, with or without white, sometimes so extensive that the dog is tricolour or white with patches.
Temperament
Alert, brave and energetic, the Ca Rater is a good watchdog and a loyal companion. Its ratting and hunting instinct is strong, so it chases small animals readily.
It is lively and needs company and activity.
Care and exercise
Daily walks and play are needed, along with a secure garden, since it will chase small prey. Training should start early.
The short coat needs only occasional brushing.
