Overview

The Briquet de Provence is a medium-sized scenthound from the south-east of France. It is recognised by the French kennel club but not by the FCI, and it remains very rare, with only a handful of new dogs registered each year.

It is a brave and tireless hunter that bonds strongly with its owner.

History

The origins are unclear. The name Briquet means mixed dog in Provençal, and dogs of this type appear in writing from 1440. A standard was written in 1934, when the breed was common, but World War II caused a sharp decline.

Organised preservation began around 1980, a breed club followed in 2003, and the French kennel club recognised the breed in 2006.

Appearance

A well-balanced, medium-sized hound, slightly longer than tall. Males stand about 50 to 55 cm and females 44 to 50 cm, weighing roughly 18 to 27 kg. The ears are set at eye level or a little lower with slightly curled front edges, and there is a dewlap at the throat. The belly is slightly tucked up and the low-set tail is carried high when working.

Temperament

Brave, efficient and resilient in the field, at home it is friendly and obedient and forms a close bond with its owner. It should get along well with other dogs. It uses its pronounced hunting voice only when hunting.

Care and exercise

This is an energetic, fast dog that does not tire quickly, so it needs considerable daily exercise and suits an active hunting household or a home with space. The short coat needs only occasional brushing.

Health

The breed lives about 11 to 13 years, and no specific health conditions are associated with it.
