Overview
The Stephens Stock is a small, compact cur with a hound-like look. It was developed in southeast Kentucky for treeing small game and has strong hunting instincts.
It is a high-energy dog that does best with a job to do and adapts poorly to life as a pet.
History
The Stephens family of southeast Kentucky kept a distinct line of Mountain Cur for more than a century. In 1970 the line was judged distinctive enough to be called a separate breed.
Hugh Stephens is regarded as the founder of the modern breed, and the United Kennel Club recognised it in 1998.
Appearance
A compact, sleek dog standing about 41 to 58 cm tall and weighing 16 to 25 kg. The short coat is black, usually with white markings on the extremities.
The small head and narrow muzzle give it the lean impression of a hound.
Temperament
This is a determined, energetic hunter with a strong prey drive. It is courageous and, hunting in a pack, is thought bold enough to take on larger quarry such as bear or cougar.
It is happiest working and tends to struggle with a quiet pet life.
Care and exercise
It needs plenty of vigorous daily exercise and real work or sport to occupy its mind. Secure fencing is wise given its hunting drive.
The short coat is easy to care for with occasional brushing.
