Overview
The Segugio Italiano is the classic Italian scenthound, a lean, medium-sized hound built for endurance. It comes in two coat varieties, the wire-haired Pelo Forte and the smooth-haired Pelo Raso.
It is used above all for hunting hare and wild boar, following a trail with great stamina and a clear, ringing voice. At home it is usually mild and affectionate, but it needs room to run and a purpose.
History
Hounds of this type have been known in Italy for centuries, and they appear in art from the Renaissance and earlier. They were kept by hunters throughout the peninsula, often in local types, until Italian breeders worked to unify and standardise them.
Today the breed is recognised by the FCI with both coat varieties under a single standard, and it remains a popular working hound in its homeland.
Appearance
A refined, rather long-headed hound with a lean, athletic body, long ears set low, and a dry, elegant outline. The smooth variety has a short, glossy coat, while the wire-haired variety has a harsh, rough coat that protects it in brush.
Temperament
The Segugio is a passionate hunter that works with great stamina and concentration, using its voice freely on the trail. Away from work it is calm, affectionate and good-natured with family, though it can be reserved with strangers and is happiest in company.
Care and exercise
It needs long daily exercise and plenty of chances to follow scent in safe, open country. It is not a dog for a small flat with only short walks. Grooming is simple: weekly brushing for the smooth coat and a little more for the wire coat, plus regular ear checks.
Health
Generally a sturdy, healthy working breed. Ear infections can occur because of the long, hanging ears, and its deep chest means owners should be aware of bloat.
