Overview

The Miniature Pinscher, or Zwergpinscher, is a small German dog of pinscher type. Traditionally used to hunt mice and other vermin, it is a compact, sturdy, smooth-coated dog.

Its hackney-like action, fearless animation and spirited presence are typical. It is busy, confident and loves company.

History

Miniature Pinschers were traditionally used to catch mice, lizards and other pests, and to hunt small game. An 1888 drawing by Jean Bungartz compares the breed with the German Pinscher.

The FCI fully accepted the breed in 1955. Genetic research published in 2017 found shared ancestry with the Toy Manchester Terrier.

Appearance

A well-balanced, compact, short-coupled little dog that stands 25 to 30 cm and weighs 4 to 6 kg. The coat is short, smooth and without undercoat.

It moves with a distinctive high-stepping, hackney-like gait.

Temperament

Fearless, lively and self-possessed, the Min Pin is alert and quick to sound an alarm. It is devoted to its people and may be prone to separation anxiety.

It can be strong-willed and needs early socialisation and consistent, positive training. Handle small dogs gently around young children.

Care and exercise

Daily walks and play satisfy this energetic breed, though it enjoys running and games. Keep it fenced, as it will chase small animals and has little sense of its own size.

The coat needs only occasional brushing. In cold weather a coat helps, since there is no undercoat.

Health

Few breed-specific details are given. A 2024 UK study found a life expectancy of 13.7 years, and a 2024 Italian study found 11 years.
