Overview

The Markiesje is a small Dutch companion dog, usually black, with an old-fashioned look. Dogs like it appear in paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

It is alert and lively, and although it is a companion it is not a typical lap dog. It likes to go out for walks and runs.

History

The breed is believed to be old, since small black dogs resembling it appear in Dutch paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Markiesje as we know it, however, has only been bred actively since the mid 1970s.

The Dutch kennel club, the Raad van Beheer, accepted it as an official breed. It is not yet recognised by the FCI.

Appearance

The Markiesje is a small, compact companion dog, typically black. Its look is that of the little dogs of Dutch Golden Age portraits.

Temperament

It is alert and will act as a watchdog. It is a companion rather than a lap dog and likes long walks and runs.

It can live with other pets such as cats and rodents, provided they are introduced properly.

Care and exercise

Daily walks and some play will keep it content. Introduce it carefully to other household pets and socialise it early. Coat care is modest.
