Overview

The Majestic Tree Hound is a recent American hound developed for hunting big game in rugged terrain. It belongs to the coonhound and bloodhound family of dogs and is not recognised by the FCI.

It is a large dog, with males often weighing over 100 pounds, and is valued for stamina and a good nose.

History

Though the breed is new, its roots reach back to medieval northern France and the hounds of St. Hubert. Hounds of the old Bloodhound, Talbot and St. Hubert type lived in America for many years and were crossed with other hounds for coldtrailing.

Breeders say they crossed Bloodhounds with western big-game hounds. In 1980 Lee Newhart Jr. and others formed the National Majestic Tree Hound Association and registered the first hounds that year.

Appearance

It is a large hound with long, low-set ears, heavy flews and a dewlap, like its ancestors from the Ardennes. It carries more loose skin on average than the American Blue Gascon Hound.

Temperament

Bred for long days of tracking, it is determined and enduring. It is best suited to experienced owners or hunters who can give it work to do.

Care and exercise

It needs a lot of exercise and room to move, ideally in a working or very active home. Its long ears should be cleaned often to prevent trouble.

Health

Hip dysplasia has been found in the breed, and the long ears need frequent cleaning.
