Overview

The Macedonian Shepherd Dog, or Karaman, is a large, muscular guardian dog with a solid black coat and a massive head. It has guarded flocks in the Balkan mountains for centuries.

It is intelligent, independent and deeply devoted to its family, while staying watchful and reserved with strangers.

History

The Karaman is one of the oldest indigenous dogs of the Balkans. Its name comes from a Turkish word for black or dark. Mountain and nomadic shepherds selected it for fearlessness, loyalty and endurance in harsh climates, and for a black coat that let it blend into the night while guarding.

On 11 February 2026 the FCI accepted the breed provisionally as the Macedonian Shepherd Dog – Karaman, standard number 378, after standardisation work led by the Kennel Association of North Macedonia.

Appearance

A large, powerful, well-muscled dog with a broad skull, strong muzzle and almond-shaped eyes ranging from dark brown to amber. The dense double coat has a long, coarse outer layer and a thick, fine undercoat.

The hallmark is solid black, though small white patches on the chest or toes are acceptable.

Temperament

Intelligent and independent, shaped by centuries of making its own decisions beside the flock. It is deeply loyal to its family, reserved with strangers and brave when defending its territory.

It is not needlessly aggressive but will react firmly to real danger.

Care and exercise

This is a guardian that needs space, firm and experienced handling and thorough early socialisation. A secure large property is essential.

The thick double coat needs regular brushing, particularly during heavy seasonal shedding.
