Overview

The Dogue Brasileiro is a medium-sized, muscular mastiff-type dog from Brazil, developed as an urban guardian. It is recognised by the Brazilian kennel confederation but not by the FCI or the AKC.

It is balanced and alert, affectionate and obedient with its family, and watchful with strangers.

History

The breed began in 1978, when Pedro Pessoa Ribeiro Dantas of Rio Grande do Sul bred a Bull Terrier to a Boxer. A brindle female from the litter, Tigresa, proved to be affectionate, agile and a fine guard, and further crosses followed under the name Bull Boxer.

A few American Staffordshire Terrier crosses were tried before the studbook was closed. The breed club was founded in 1986, the CBKC accepted the breed in 1999 and the current standard dates from 2007. About 2,000 dogs appear in the registry.

Appearance

A medium-sized, strong and athletic dog, massive without looking heavy. Males stand 54 to 60 cm and weigh 29 to 43 kg; females 50 to 58 cm and 23 to 39 kg.

The shiny coat is harsh and dense, either short or medium in length, and all colours are accepted.

Temperament

Active, fearless and watchful with a strong guarding instinct, it is obedient, gentle and affectionate with its family. It is serious with strangers and ready to defend if provoked, but should not show aggression without clear reason, even toward other dogs.

In Brazilian shows it must pass a character test to earn a championship.

Care and exercise

Exercise needs are moderate to high; it enjoys daily walks, play and protection-style sport. Early socialisation and firm, positive training are important for a guard dog of this strength.

The short coat is simple to maintain with occasional brushing.

Health

The breeder reported a lifespan of about 13 years and strong pain tolerance. No breed-specific conditions are well documented.
