At a glance

Overview

The Clumber Spaniel is a long, low, heavy-boned spaniel that is mostly white with lemon or orange markings. It is the largest of the spaniels and takes its name from Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire.

It is gentle and loyal, a little aloof with strangers and happiest wherever its owner is. It is a slow but steady gundog and a calm companion.

History

Its early history is uncertain. One theory says that the Duc de Noailles gave spaniels to the Duke of Newcastle during the French Revolution, while another traces it to the old Blenheim Spaniel. The name comes from Clumber Park, and the gamekeeper William Mansell is credited with developing the breed.

Prince Albert, Edward VII and George V all kept and promoted Clumbers. Numbers fell to a low during World War I, and the breed is now listed as a Vulnerable Native Breed in the UK.

Appearance

A long, heavy-bodied dog standing 43 to 51 cm tall and weighing about 25 to 39 kg. The massive head has a square muzzle, a soft, mournful expression and large vine-leaf shaped ears.

The dense, flat, weather-resistant coat has feathering on the ears, belly and legs. It is mainly white with lemon, orange or brown markings, and freckles on the muzzle and legs are common.

Temperament

Gentle, loyal and affectionate with its family, the Clumber is dignified and a little reserved with strangers and with unfamiliar dogs. It enjoys lounging indoors yet is playful as a puppy.

It has a mind of its own and loves to carry things in its mouth. It is not a frequent barker and makes a better companion than watchdog.

Care and exercise

Moderate daily walks suit it well, and it is content indoors or out. Avoid heat and always provide shade, as it overheats easily.

Brush frequently, as it sheds at a medium pace, and wipe the drooping lips and clean the ears. Watch what it picks up, since it may swallow objects.

Health

Fast-growing puppies can have temporary lameness at six to twelve months. Hip dysplasia, spinal disc herniation, entropion and ectropion, impacted anal sacs, heat sensitivity and sensitivity to anaesthesia occur. Breeding and whelping often need veterinary help.
