Overview
The Ca de Bestiar is the traditional shepherd dog of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. It is one of four recognised dog breeds of the island.
It works livestock and guards rural property. Numbers are small, and Spain's kennel society lists it as a vulnerable breed.
History
Its origins are unknown, but it has long been the island's shepherd dog, with the first descriptions dating from the nineteenth century.
A breed standard was approved in 1980 and the FCI accepted the breed in 1982. Spain recognised it as a national breed in 2001, and a breed club was officially recognised in 2002.
Appearance
A medium to large dog with a body weight around 40 kg. Males stand roughly 66 to 73 cm and females 62 to 68 cm at the withers.
The coat is usually short and close-fitting, entirely black, with or without a white chest patch. A longer-coated variety is described in the standard but is rare or possibly gone. The ears are triangular and hang close to the head.
Temperament
A capable working dog, loyal to its people and a fierce guardian of its territory. Males in particular can be highly territorial and combative with other dogs.
It needs an experienced, confident owner and thorough socialisation.
Care and exercise
This is a working dog that needs space, regular exercise and a job to do. It is not suited to city life.
The short coat needs only occasional brushing. Firm, consistent training from an early age is important.
