Overview
The Bulgarian Scenthound is a classic hound of the Balkans, built for following game by scent across rolling country. It is the most widely kept smooth-haired hunting dog in Bulgaria.
It has never been tied to a rigid written standard, but its body shape is unmistakably hound-like. Most are kept by hunters who prize nose, stamina and voice above looks.
History
The breed developed in the Ludogorie region of northern Bulgaria, where hunters relied on hounds to track hare and other game. Over time it spread across the country and became the most common short-coated hunting hound there.
Its closest relatives are other Balkan hounds, namely the Greek Harehound, the Serbian Hound and the Transylvanian Hound.
Appearance
A hound of moderate build with a smooth, short coat, a long muzzle and drop ears. The body follows the typical hound outline, lean and muscular enough for long days of work.
Because the breed is not standardised, size and colour vary somewhat between lines and regions.
Temperament
Like most scent hounds, it is driven by its nose and happiest when working. It is typically friendly with people, persistent on a trail and quite vocal when following a scent.
It does best with an active owner who understands the independent hound mind.
Care and exercise
This dog needs plenty of daily exercise and a safe, fenced space, since a strong scent can pull it far from home. Mental work such as tracking games suits it well.
The short coat needs only occasional brushing, plus regular checks of the ears and nails.
Health
Little specific health data exists. As a hardy working hound it is generally robust, but long drop ears call for routine cleaning to avoid infections.
