Overview
The Bruno Jura Hound comes from the Jura Mountains on the French-Swiss border. It is a medium-sized hound, usually black and tan or two-tone brown with no white at all.
It is a working hunting dog, valued by local hunters in demanding terrain.
History
The breed is one of the Jura hounds, closely related to the larger St. Hubert Jura Hound and to nearby French hounds. All are believed to descend from the old St. Hubert Hound.
It is found on both sides of the border, and some writers think it French in origin, though most describe it as Swiss.
Appearance
A medium-sized hound, closely resembling the larger St. Hubert Jura Hound but with less pendulous dewlaps. The coat is black and tan or two-tone brown, with no white markings at all.
Temperament
Bred as a hunting hound, it is determined and persistent on a trail, with the patience to work a faint scent over difficult ground. It tends to be loyal to its handler and best suited to a working or very active home.
Care and exercise
The Bruno Jura Hound needs a lot of exercise and mental work, especially chances to follow scent. A secure area is important, as it may follow a trail a long way.
The short coat needs only simple brushing, and the hanging ears should be checked regularly.
