Overview

The Basque Shepherd Dog is a sturdy, rectangular sheepdog from the historic Basque Country in northern Spain. It is one of a small group of native Basque dog breeds and is closely tied to the region's pastoral culture.

Two varieties exist: the Gorbeiakoa with a soft, smooth coat and the Iletsua with a rougher, shaggier one. Both are working dogs first, valued for herding, guarding and trial work, and the breed remains rare.

History

Dogs of this type have lived alongside Basque shepherds for centuries and appear in local mythology, church frescoes and later in paintings and drawings. The breed was recognised by the Spanish kennel club in 1996 in two varieties, and Spain's government gave official recognition and a standard in 2001 and 2002.

Numbers are small, with an estimate of around 500 dogs in 2009, and the breed is considered vulnerable. Some Basque shepherds took their dogs to the United States in the 1950s.

Appearance

The body is strong and rectangular, usually 10 to 20 percent longer than tall. The eyes are oval and brown or amber, and the medium-sized triangular ears hang or fold. Males stand roughly 47 to 63 cm and weigh about 18 to 36 kg; females are a little smaller.

The Gorbeiakoa has a soft, smooth coat of moderate length in fire-red or fawn, often with a darker muzzle. The Iletsua has a harsher, wirier coat in cinnamon or fawn.

Temperament

A capable, focused working dog, the Basque Shepherd is alert, loyal to its people and keen to have a job. It is used to making decisions around livestock and to guarding farmsteads.

It does best with an active owner who offers purpose, structure and early socialisation rather than a quiet life as a sofa companion.

Care and exercise

This is an active herding dog that needs plenty of daily exercise and mental work, ideally herding, trials or other dog sports. It suits rural homes with space better than small flats.

Grooming is modest: regular brushing keeps either coat in good order, with extra attention in shedding periods, especially for the rougher Iletsua coat.

Health

Little specific health data exists for this rare working breed, and it is generally regarded as hardy. As with many medium to large dogs, responsible breeders may screen hips.
