Overview

The American Leopard Hound is a hunting dog from the United States, recognised by the United Kennel Club as a scenthound. It is also listed in the American Kennel Club's Foundation Stock Service.

It is known for its leopard-like spotted coat and its ability to follow game and climb to tree it.

History

The breed is thought to descend from dogs that Spanish conquistadors brought to Mexico and that settlers later carried north to hunt bear. The UKC recognised it as the Leopard Cur in 1998, and the name changed to American Leopard Hound in 2008.

The AKC has included it in its Foundation Stock Service since 2012.

Appearance

This medium to large hound stands about 53 to 68 cm and weighs roughly 15 to 35 kg. It has a dense, short coat, medium drop ears and eyes that may be yellow, brown or blue.

The coat is leopard or spotted and may be red, blue, merle, brindle, black or other colours, with white covering less than a third.

Temperament

A working hound by nature, it is vocal in guarding and tireless when hunting. It tends to be loyal and attached to its family and best suits active homes or hunters.

Care and exercise

It needs lots of daily exercise and a job to do, plus a secure yard. The short coat needs only weekly brushing.
