New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a statewide disaster emergency over measles on Oct. 5, the first such declaration by a U.S. state since cases began surging in 2025. The order runs through Nov. 4.
The state has recorded 108 measles cases this year, 92 of them since July 15, mostly in under-immunized rural communities across 18 counties. The order lets paramedics, advanced EMS providers, pharmacists and midwives give the measles vaccine, and lets nurses order testing.
New York also launched a public Measles Dashboard to track local risk. Neighboring Pennsylvania has reported 1,004 cases across 39 counties in 2026, including five measles-associated deaths.
