SpaceX has agreed to acquire nationwide 800 MHz low-band wireless spectrum from Grain Management in a deal reported at about $8 billion. The package covers up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum and is subject to FCC approval.

Low-band signals travel farther and penetrate buildings better than higher-frequency satellite signals, which addresses a remaining technical gap in SpaceX's Starlink Mobile strategy. The company aims to combine its satellite constellation with terrestrial wireless infrastructure.

Wireless stocks fell sharply after the announcement as investors priced in possible competition with AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
