Waymo now operates paid robotaxi service in 15 U.S. cities, up from just three in September 2024, and is averaging 500,000 paid rides a week across a fleet of roughly 4,000 vehicles. About 80% of that fleet is concentrated in California and Texas.
Texas growth has been especially fast: the state's fleet grew 49% in the past three weeks alone, from around 700 vehicles in August to 1,102 registered autonomous vehicles by September 24. Roughly a third of the Texas fleet now consists of newer Zeekr-built Ojai minivans running Waymo's sixth-generation self-driving system, alongside the company's familiar white Jaguar I-Pace SUVs. Waymo expects to import about 5,100 Ojai vans by year's end.
The expansion follows Waymo's March 2025 commercial launch in Austin via an Uber partnership, since extended to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio, with Florida emerging as another hot spot. The Alphabet-owned company is now chasing a stated goal of 1 million paid weekly rides by the end of 2026 — a tenfold increase from the roughly 50,000 weekly rides it recorded in May 2024.
