French AI startup Mistral AI announced a €3 billion Series D round on September 8, 2026, pushing its post-money valuation past €21 billion — nearly double the €11.7 billion it was worth just a year ago. The company says it is the largest equity fundraising ever completed by a European technology company.

Samsung Electronics led the round, co-led by EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity. New backers Advent, BlackRock funds, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg joined returning investors including a16z, ASML, Nvidia, General Catalyst, and Salesforce Ventures. Mistral, founded in April 2023 by ex-Meta and Google researchers, now serves more than 125 enterprise clients — including Airbus, ASML, and HSBC — across 20 countries.

The fresh capital will fund frontier model research and a major expansion of compute capacity, as Mistral positions itself as Europe's answer to US and Chinese AI labs. The company frames its pitch around "sovereign AI" — giving organizations full control over their data, models, and infrastructure rather than depending on foreign cloud providers.
