The U.S. Department of Defense has expanded its GenAI.mil portal with two new custom AI tools: ChatGPT Mil from OpenAI and Grok for Government from Starshield AI (xAI). The platform, which previously offered only Google Gemini, has already onboarded 1.7 million unique users out of the department's roughly 3 million personnel.

ChatGPT Mil is built for document-heavy unclassified work such as planning, policy, logistics, and administration, while Grok for Government targets tasks like market research for acquisition professionals and supply-chain management for logisticians. Both tools give DoD staff access to frontier commercial AI models without routing sensitive government data through consumer-facing services.

Notably absent from the portal is Anthropic's Claude. A dispute over contractual guardrails — Anthropic insisted its technology not be used for mass surveillance of Americans or lethal autonomous weapons — has kept the model off GenAI.mil, even as a federal judge separately ruled the Pentagon's earlier “supply-chain risk” designation against the company unlawful.
