OpenAI announced its ChatGPT advertising business has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate just 200 days after launch. The company's ad pilot began in the U.S. earlier in 2026 and had already crossed $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks of its initial rollout.

Starting August 31, OpenAI opened its Ads Manager platform to advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, previously U.S.-only. Small and medium-sized businesses now make up a "material share" of ad revenue, and ads appear only on ChatGPT's free tier and the lower-priced Go plan — always labeled and kept separate from chatbot answers, with advertisers barred from accessing private conversations.

The milestone still falls well short of OpenAI's reported $2.5 billion ad-revenue target for 2026, prompting Emarketer analyst Nate Elliott to call it "incredibly impressive and terribly disappointing." OpenAI's total annualized revenue run rate topped $40 billion in August, roughly double a year earlier, as the company — which has filed confidentially for a U.S. IPO — pushes into a market dominated by Google and Meta.
