SpaceX and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced on August 25 a $100 billion investment to build "Starbase Louisiana," a new Starship manufacturing and launch complex near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish. The site will convert roughly 125,000-130,000 acres of coastal land into a self-sustaining industrial spaceport.

The fully built-out facility will include 10 Starship launch pads across five complexes, a vehicle processing facility, deep-water shipping ports, a dedicated airport, power generation plants, and an onsite natural gas plant to produce liquid methane fuel. Combined with existing sites, it would give SpaceX 15 operational launch pads.

Construction is set to begin in 2027, with first launches no earlier than 2029. SpaceX says the complex could eventually support over 1,000 missions a year, working toward Elon Musk's goal of more than 10,000 Starship flights annually by 2030. Musk called it a spaceport that "until now, has only existed in science fiction."
