Early testers who have gotten hands-on time with Apple's upcoming foldable iPhone Ultra are largely impressed, according to a report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The device pairs a 5.5-inch outer display with a roughly 7.8-inch inner screen that unfolds into an iPad-like layout, and testers praised its pocket-friendly form factor and durable hinge mechanism.

The one sticking point is the camera. To keep the folded device at around 4.5mm thick, Apple skipped a telephoto lens entirely, leaving just a 48-megapixel main sensor and an ultra-wide lens on the back — a notable gap for a phone expected to start at $2,000 and climb toward $2,500 for top storage configurations. Apple also replaced in-display Face ID with a side-mounted Touch ID button to save space inside the hinge.

The iPhone Ultra is expected to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at Apple's fall event around September 9, 2026, marking the company's first entry into the foldable phone category years after Samsung and Chinese rivals established the format.
