Tesla has pulled the plug on its Solar Roof tile program, telling certified installers the company will now supply only conventional solar panels. "Solar Roof" has been stripped from the Energy section of Tesla's website, which now redirects straight to the panels page.

Internally, sources say Tesla concluded the tiles were simply "not financially viable." The product, unveiled by Elon Musk in 2016 on a Hollywood set, never came close to its promised scale: Tesla installed only around 3,000 Solar Roof systems across the US in roughly seven years, peaking at 21-32 installs per week versus the 1,000-per-week goal Musk set. A 2023 class-action settlement paid out $6 million after customers saw contracted prices balloon, in one case from about $72,000 to $146,000.

The decision caps years of quiet decline — Tesla stopped reporting Solar Roof deployment numbers back in early 2024. Conventional panels, which have gotten dramatically cheaper over the past decade, will now be Tesla Energy's sole roof-solar offering.
