OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told investors on August 14 that enterprise revenue has now overtaken the company's consumer ChatGPT business, months ahead of the crossover originally forecast for late 2026. "We entered the year at 60-40 [consumer-led], but enterprise has accelerated much faster than expected and those lines have now crossed," Friar said. "The majority of our revenue is now enterprise."
OpenAI's annualized revenue run rate has reached $40 billion, up 20% month-over-month in July, with the number of business customers growing 32% in the same period. The company now counts more than 1 billion weekly active users and 2 million businesses on its platform, while its advertising business is approaching a $1 billion annual run rate.
The milestone lands amid executive turnover, including the August 13 departure of Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser. It underscores a broader shift for OpenAI from a consumer chatbot phenomenon toward a business-software company competing directly with Microsoft, Google and Salesforce for corporate budgets.
