Google's Gemini app has surpassed 1 billion monthly active users, CEO Sundar Pichai announced August 11, becoming the company's fastest-growing product ever and its 14th service to reach the milestone. Gemini jumped from 650 million users in October 2025 to over 1 billion in under a year, fueled by more than 150 million images generated daily and a 63% share of users interacting through direct voice conversations.
Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, Gemini and AI Studio, said the team's goal "remains to make it the most personal, proactive and powerful assistant." One in five Gemini Live sessions now include video or screen sharing, and Android users can automate tasks across more than 40 apps.
Gemini's rise puts it alongside OpenAI's ChatGPT, which crossed 1 billion users in May 2026 roughly three years after launch — meaning Gemini reached the same scale in about half the time. Anthropic's Claude trails both with 56 million monthly users, though its user base grew a striking 640% year-over-year, compared with ChatGPT's 62%.
