Overview
The Old English Sheepdog is a large, square, shaggy herding dog instantly known by its profuse grey and white coat and fur-covered face. It walks with a distinctive rolling gait, and is the famous face of a paint brand in the UK.
It is a sociable, funny family dog that thrives on company and activity, but the coat is a serious commitment and the breed is not suited to people who dislike grooming.
History
The breed grew out of the pastoral dogs of southwestern England, where bobtailed drovers' dogs may be among its ancestors, and the Bearded Collie is thought to have contributed. It was first shown at Birmingham in 1873 under the name Shepherd's Dog.
It became a popular show dog, was exported to the United States in the 1880s, and was kept by wealthy American families by 1900. Since 1961 it has been the mascot of Dulux paint, which gave rise to the nickname Dulux dog.
Appearance
A large, compact, square dog with a deep chest, standing lower at the shoulder than at the loin. Height is at least 61 cm, with females slightly smaller.
The double coat is long, shaggy and harsh in texture, with a waterproof undercoat. Ears lie flat, and the tail was traditionally docked, though many dogs now keep their natural feathered tail.
Temperament
Old English Sheepdogs are warm, outgoing and playful, with a goofy sense of humour that often lasts well into adulthood. They are devoted to their families and usually good with children.
Their herding instinct can show up as gentle nudging of people. They are intelligent but can be willful, so patient, positive training works best.
Care and exercise
Brush and comb thoroughly several times a week to prevent mats, and expect professional grooming or a trimmed coat to make things easier. The beard and face fur need regular cleaning.
They need a good daily walk and play, enjoy herding, agility and obedience, and dislike being left alone for long. They can overheat in warm weather.
Health
Hip dysplasia, allergic skin disease, demodicosis, bloat (gastric dilatation volvulus) and dilated cardiomyopathy are seen. Many carry the MDR1 mutation, which makes some drugs such as ivermectin dangerous. Average life span is about 12 years.
