Overview
The Pastore della Lessinia e del Lagorai is an old shepherd dog from northeastern Italy. It has long been used to manage herds and drive cattle across the plains of the Triveneto region.
It is not yet recognised by any major kennel organisation, but a society is working to protect the breed and win official status.
History
The breed has long been a working dog in the pastoral life of northeastern Italy. A 2018 genetic study placed it among several Italian herding breeds that arose from a widespread European herding dog before 1859.
Because it was selected by natural selection for work, it remains a rustic and healthy dog. An Italian society leads a project to protect the breed from extinction.
Appearance
A medium-sized, agile sheepdog of lupine type. The ears are large and triangular and may be erect, semi-erect or drooping.
The coat is semi-long with a thick undercoat. Typical colours include fawn, blue or red merle, brown and black.
Temperament
These dogs are docile, active and curious, and they are naturally keen herders that drive sheep, cattle and horses.
They need plenty of exercise and work to stay happy, and are best suited to active homes or working farms.
Care and exercise
A working dog by nature, it needs lots of daily exercise and a job or activity to do. A rural home with space suits it best.
Brush the semi-long coat weekly and more often when it sheds.
Health
Bred for work and shaped by natural selection, it is considered a hardy, healthy breed.
