Stripe has finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter, an AI gateway startup that lets developers switch between more than 400 AI models through a single API, for over $7 billion. The price marks a massive jump from OpenRouter's $1.3 billion valuation just three months earlier, when it raised a $113 million Series B from investors including Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet's Capital G.

OpenRouter, led by CEO Alex Atallah, has described itself as "the equivalent of Stripe for AI" — giving customers a single access point to swap AI providers based on cost or performance without getting locked into one vendor. The startup says it serves roughly 8 million users worldwide.

The deal pushes Stripe further into AI infrastructure, pairing its payments backbone with a platform that already routes billions of AI model calls. It signals that even outside the foundation-model labs, the fight to control how businesses access and pay for AI is heating up fast.
