Apple has built its own large language model for the Chinese market instead of relying entirely on a third-party AI provider, according to reports published August 14, 2026. The model was developed with technical support from Alibaba, whose Qwen system Apple had previously planned to plug into Siri as an extension, similar to how ChatGPT is integrated elsewhere.
The move makes Apple the first foreign company approved by Chinese regulators to offer its own proprietary AI model inside the country, sidestepping restrictions that have kept other U.S. tech firms from launching independent AI services there. Apple briefly published, then pulled within 24 hours, a support document describing how Mac users could connect Alibaba's Qwen model to Siri.
Apple Intelligence features built on the new in-house model are expected to roll out in China within the coming months, giving the company a dual-track AI strategy: its own model in China, and Apple-developed or partner models elsewhere, as it works to keep pace with domestic rivals like Huawei.
