Anthropic announced a strategic partnership with Macquarie Asset Management and Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC on August 10 to launch Theseus Infrastructure, a new platform dedicated to developing and operating data centers exclusively for the AI company.
Under the deal, Macquarie and GIC will own Theseus and fund the majority of equity for each project, while Anthropic acts as the anchor tenant, leasing capacity through long-term agreements rather than building or owning the facilities itself. The initial focus is on new sites in the United States, with each facility purpose-built for Anthropic's growing compute needs. Anthropic has also committed to covering any electricity price increases that nearby communities might face as a result of the buildout.
The lease-based structure mirrors a broader trend among AI labs: Meta has shifted $279 billion in data center leases off its balance sheet and Google has guaranteed $44 billion in rent on facilities it doesn't own, letting AI companies scale compute without loading capital expenditure onto their books — a move that also lines Anthropic's finances up ahead of a planned public listing.
