AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic partnership on July 22, under which AMD will make a strategic equity investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic, while Anthropic commits to deploying up to 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 series GPUs.

The first gigawatt of capacity is set to come online in the first half of 2027, housed in AMD's Helios rack-scale systems alongside EPYC "Venice" CPUs, Pensando networking, and the ROCm software stack. Anthropic will acquire some chips outright for its own facilities while leasing the rest through cloud providers and neoclouds. AMD CEO Lisa Su said compute planning requires 12-18 months of lead time: "You can't just wake up one morning and say, 'Oh, I want a gigawatt of compute tomorrow.'" Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown called the deal central to "keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand."

The agreement marks AMD's first-ever investment in Anthropic and its biggest swing yet at Nvidia's dominance of the AI chip market; in return, Anthropic has committed to purchasing tens of billions of dollars in AMD server chips over the life of the deal. AMD shares rose more than 8% on the news.
