Eight states (Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho and Montana) have sued OpenAI in separate but coordinated state-court filings. Their attorneys general, from both major parties, allege that ChatGPT harms children and that OpenAI misled parents about the platform's safety for minors.

The suits argue the chatbot's overly agreeable design encourages trust and dependence, reinforces delusions and has given young users harmful guidance, including on self-harm. They invoke state consumer-protection laws and public-nuisance claims, and seek financial penalties plus court-ordered safeguards.

Reuters described the filings as the most significant coordinated state action against an AI company so far, arriving as OpenAI prepares for a public listing. The claims are allegations; OpenAI has not been found liable.
