Critical safety information for mushroom foragers

The #1 Rule

NEVER eat a mushroom you cannot identify with 100% certainty. "Probably" and "looks like" are not good enough. One mistake can be fatal.

Delayed Symptoms = Emergency

If symptoms appear 6+ hours after eating mushrooms, suspect amatoxin poisoning (Death Cap). This is a medical emergency - call an ambulance immediately.

Learn from Experts

Join a mycological society. Attend guided forays. Use multiple field guides specific to your region. Never rely solely on apps or websites.

Check ALL Features

Never identify based on a single feature. Check cap, gills/pores, stem, ring, volva, spore print, smell, habitat, AND season. Take notes and photos.

The Deadly Species You MUST Know

Mushroom Poisoning Emergency

  1. Call emergency services immediately (112 in Europe, 911 in US)
  2. Save a sample of the mushroom (cap, stem, and BASE) for identification
  3. Note the time when the mushroom was eaten and when symptoms started
  4. Do NOT induce vomiting unless instructed by medical professionals
  5. Tell doctors if symptoms were delayed (6+ hours = likely amatoxin = life-threatening)
